How many words have been said on this topic already? It is always easier to give advice than actually follow it. Of course, no one knows about your problems better than you, because you are the one who lives with this body, not them. You are the one who looks at the mirror and sees every imperfection. You are the one who feels uncomfortable in your own skin. You are the one who tried a million recipes on how to become a better version of yourself.
But you know, this is all fear. None of the methods will work until you gain enough strength to look at yourself and recognize the perfection of yourself at this current moment. All fears come from the past and block your future, but they don’t exist now. When you look at yourself in an empty room where there is nobody but your reflection, there is no one to compare yourself against just as there would be nobody if you were last person on earth. There is nobody but you and there is no good or bad.
Everything we have right now is a result of our actions, decisions, dreams. Any great or horrible things that happen are results that come from the same sources. Look at your fears and think of them as if they were people. Where are they from? Why they are here? How long have you known them? Did someone introduce them to you or did you find them on the cover of your favorite magazine? And now listen to them and what they are trying to tell you.
Fear is a normal condition that is made to protect us. When we see a big rock coming down from the hill we feel fear, it goes to our brain and it makes us react. Fear saves our life. We don’t hate it at this moment, we don’t reject it, we just instinctively act. The same rule works with any obtained fear. That’s why an exercise with a mirror saying “I am beautiful!” doesn’t work. Because you are basically saying that rock isn’t falling and that’s why you are getting injured. You can’t simply ignore it.
To overcome body fears we should listen to them and see what good they are doing to us. Usually, body fears come from deep psychological issues that may have nothing to do with how we look physically. But we transfer our deep issues to more shallow ones. The most obvious object is our body of course. So it’s important to understand what are those problems you ignored that made you an enemy of the only gift you have for this entire life.
Later, I will write in more detail on the different sides to this controversial issue.
