This Non-Toxic Skincare Brand Saved Me This Winter

Following up on the post I wrote previously on my skincare routine, I’m sharing my favorite products I use on a daily basis.

I’ve decided to share the specific brands with you because I know how easy it is for us, consumers, to get fooled by a pretty packaging and a name that has something like “natural”. I also know how hard it is to find something that is really natural, non-toxic and WORKS. Because, frankly, if something is clean but doesn’t do what it has to, what’s the point of it?

For now, I only worked out a good nourishing routine. However, I didn’t find a good cleanser and using one from the brand I won’t name here. It works fine, but it’s not EWG.org verified, and, as you will see, I’m living by this website.

I also prefer cosmetics that are responsible for the environment or at least do their best. Unlike that one brand I purchased from, that sent me their products in dozens of unnecessary plastic boxes. UGH. Make it stop.

Below are a few of my staples that keep my skin hydrated, clean and glowy:

  1. Biossance

This brand was my treasure find. As you know, I’m a big fan of EWG.org. They have gone through thousands of products, investigating the ingredient list on toxicity. It’s a good tool to use if you just want to check what you already have in your drawer, or if you’re looking for something new. You can just go straight to EWG.org/skindeep page and search for “EWG Verified”. Verified are the products that have the least bad impact on you according to their scale of evaluation. That’s how I discovered Biossance.

Use this referral link to get $15OFF your first order.

I use their SQUALANE + PROBIOTIC GEL MOISTURIZER. I was suspicious about the probiotics in it at first because of an article I read about how cosmetic industry is trying to make it a trend, but it’s not always effective. I decided to give this one a try, thanks to all the praising reviews.

So far, I don’t regret my decision. It’s probably the first time when I bought the same skincare product second time around. Usually, I would not notice any difference and just keep searching. With this moisturizer, my skin is pimple-free and hydrated, even the week before period.

Another product I use is 100% SQUALANE OIL.

I used to avoid oil moisturizers because I thought it would make my face oily. It turns out that if you’re prone to oily skin, it’s even better to use oil instead of the product that will reduce it.

Why so? Because when you wash off all the natural oil your skin produces, you might get that matte look for a little while, but your skin will have to produce a lot more oil next time to compensate for the loss. Think of it as an emergency treatment, the way your body reacts to a strict diet. You might lose a few pounds over a short period of time, but then your body will try to bring them back, or even more.

Oil moisturizer, on the contrary, can help prevent the skin from producing too much oil. This is what really saved me this winter. Biossance’s Squalane Oil makes my skin very soft and moisturized (even in rough New York winter conditions), yet it never leaves that sticky oily film on my face.

2. Handmade Remedy

To keep my whole body hydrated, I use my home-made balm. It’s very easy to make, takes 10 minutes total, and it makes me very proud to offer it to anyone who would randomly ask me about a hand cream or a chapstick.

Ingredients:

  • Shea butter

  • Cocoa butter

  • Coconut oil

  • Olive oil (or any other organic liquid oil you like)

I melt all the ingredients in the glass jar that I put onto a double boiler. My kind of double boiler is just a pot filled with water, then I put my glass jar right on the bottom of it. Not really a double then, I guess. I never measure anything and, as with food, use my intuition and potion maker’s imagination. You need to put more hard ingredients like Shea and Cocoa butters to keep it creamy, then a bit less of a coconut oil and just a bit of any liquid oil you choose. You can also infuse it with the essential oils, but I’m not good at picking the right ones, so I never do.

This body cream is a great moisturizer, it serves me well all year round, but especially in winter, when my hands and shins become prone to extreme dryness. I wouldn’t recommend using it on your face as It can be a bit too heavy.

I hope this post will be useful for you. Please do let me know what are your favorite non-toxic skincare brands.

I’m also planning to follow up on the story about skincare in about a month as I want to try two brands I heard great things about. It will take time to use them and see if they’re really working, only then I will share my experience with you.

Truly yours,

Bogdana
